I was holding my first grandson when he started to cry. I automatically made the first motion to bring him towards me to nurse. I stopped and thought, “Oh, he is not my baby”. But he is mine in a way, but not mine. I handed him to my daughter and was amazed as she began her journey of nurturing. I have been a mother for 27 years and raised six children. It was a new experience not to be the one who fed the crying baby. At the same time I was filled with joy for my daughter. It is a transition I am trying to make with grace. I now have two grand children and my heart has grown so large with love for them. They live in Germany in the military with my daughter and son-in-law. It still feels strange to have them exist in the world and not be “mine”. It is like a new bubble was created with a set and subset (if you can remember your 3rd grade math). They are a part of my circle but not exactly in my circle.
